Well this really has to be one of the best additions to a French dessert menu in fact, I think it is the star of the dessert menu in some restaurants. Le Café Gourmand typically comprises an artistic display of ‘bite size’ desserts normally three to five mini desserts served with an espresso coffee. Often presented more like a work of art on an array of china or glass platters or plates, wood boards or slates and using dishes such as miniature Kilner jars, ramekins, china ladles and baby jam pots. I am making it my mission to try as many Café Gourmands as I visit the Haute Savoie and surrounding area restaurants in my quest to find the best one.
Le Café Gourmand seems to be a recent addition to the French menu, I believe originating in Paris around 2005, during a trend to create a quicker lunch by serving dessert and coffee together to save time. Apart from the time-saving aspect of this wonderful invention, one has the opportunity to try several different desserts without the guilt as they are all miniature taster size, thus saving calories! I love Le Café Gourmand because of the element of surprise as the mini desserts are not normally named on the menu and so far in my Café Gourmand tasting journey every one is different!
Le Café Gourmand continues to grow in popularity and I am still on my quest to find the best, here are a few recent ones I’ve tried in 2015 – never has there been a better excuse to try most of the desserts on the menu! great fun to photograph these colourful pieces of art too!
