Chateau des Avenieres

Well, what a treat this was, lunch at the beautiful Chateau des Avenieres.  I’ve visited the chateau a few times for dinner and a Sunday lunch but this was my first week-day  lunchtime experience.  Once again I was treated to the most wonderful food in truly elegant surroundings with stunning views.

Les Domaine des Avenieres; a hotel too, is nestled into the Saleve mountain side, on the edge of the forest at around 1150 metres overlooking the Mont Blanc, countryside of the Haute Savoie, Annecy and lake Annecy.  The Chateau was built in the early 20th Century (1907 – 1913) by a wealthy American woman Mary Wallace Schillito and the interior was created by an experienced Hindu designer. There is a beautiful small chapel in the chateau and this was built as a shrine dedicated to her younger sister who died very young. Mary Wallace Schillito was married to an Indian Assan Farid Dina who developed the gardens.  He was a very forward thinking man and became a pillar of tourism and development for the Saleve region.  He financed an electric programme for the Cruseilles area and he brought drinking water to villages and hamlets in the area.

The oak panelled dining rooms are luxurious as well as feeling open and light because of the wonderful large windows looking out at the views and onto the elegant terrace which is a wonderful place to dine in the summer.  There is an air of formality mixed with a good ambience in the dining rooms.  There are three rooms that can either be all open or left closed to give a more intimate feel and good when they are not so busy or have private parties.  There is a wonderful library with a gorgeous large stone fireplace.  The service is top quality and unobtrusive  yet friendly.  The food is outstanding, the style is gastronomic; french with a modern twist.  There are normally only 2 choices on the menus and everything is freshly prepared and beautifully presented.   I booked and enjoyed these meals at my own expense and this is my opinion of my personal experiences at The Chateau des Avenieres
