Firstly, I just love the name; after all, there is always a good excuse for a great lunch, especially if it can be eaten on the terrace in the sunshine! Ah! La Belle Excuse has become a regular lunch spot for us ladies who lunch in between shopping in Annecy. And what a wonderful town Annecy is, it is the capital of the Haute Savoie – a medieval town often referred to as the Venice of France as it is set around waterways that lead from a beautiful lake – the second largest lake in France; with breathtaking views of mountains all around. Annecy has an old town area with winding narrow streets crossing the river. This is a very popular tourist area, especially in summer. Twice a week there is a wonderful food market in the old town and once a month there is a great antiques/flea market spread throughout the old town. At the time of writing the food market is Tuesday and Friday mornings and the antiques market the last Saturday of each month but check for more information about Annecy, the lake and the markets here Lake Annecy France. I will be writing more posts about Annecy, its restaurants and food markets.
La Belle excuse is situated just next door to restaurant L’Olivier that I reviewed recently – To read the post click here L’Olivier Annecy. La Belle Excuse has a wonderful large terrace that is sometimes covered or partly covered depending on the sunshine! and covered with patio heaters when it is a little cooler. Inside the restaurant is small and the decor reminds me of a coastal town in England, light beach style colours, yachting/sailing accessories and painted wood clad walls. The plat du jour is normally very good but their salads are stunning. They have a speciality of Parmentier, the French equivalent to an English shepherds or cottage pie with a wide variety of toppings and fillings. They also specialise in tartare (raw beef steak) in different guises. There is one thing that just cannot be resisted at Ah! La Belle Excuse and that is their Cafe Gourmand, this is a must-have!
This restaurant is very popular with locals and it is advisable to book. They are open for lunch and dinner Monday through to Saturday – closed on Sundays.
