Cernex Dinner Club

Well what a great experience this was!  A monthly dinner club has been formed in our village, by a British couple; Sasha and Peter, in their home which is a beautifully renovated farmhouse with amazing views over the rolling countryside of the Haute Savoie.  This allows local people to dine in a relaxed atmosphere and meet their neighbours and make new friends.

We were lucky enough to be at the inaugural dinner club where we did indeed meet some local people who live in our village.  For us it was also a great opportunity to practice our french!  Peter and Sasha have lived in the region for several years and are very knowledgeable about local cultures, traditions, ideas of things to see and do, this again makes interesting dinner conversation and if one is new to the area, is a great introduction into village life.

In France there has long been a tradition of Table d’hôte which literally translated means the hosts table.  This means shared dining around the hosts table and is normally one menu, one sitting. Popular in chambres d’hôtes (Bed and Breakfasts) where dinner is eaten with the family.  There are many villages practising Table d’hôte today where a family will once a week or month open up their home and serve dinner at a fixed price.

The Cernex Dinner club is choosing a slightly different angle, whereby an honesty box is passed at the end of the evening and you pay what you would like to for your dinner.  Sasha the host prides herself on using seasonal and local ingredients from the local farmers markets.
