Les Cocottes, Christian Constant

I’m a fairly regular visitor to this restaurant: Les Cocottes, by Christian Constant, is conveniently situated at The Casino on the border of Switzerland and France just outside Saint Julien-en-Genevois. It is open 7 days a week and has easy parking. So, they are the practical reasons … The real reason is that this restaurant serves great food at good prices in a really good modern, light and spacious space with a brasserie style. From May to September the outdoor terrace which offers shade and faces the Jura is a very convivial place to dine. Et voila so many reasons to give Les Cocottes a try!

Chef Christian Constant
The interior of Les Cocottes is quite a departure from the Savoyard area and has a modern Parisian Brasserie feel. Maybe this is because it is attached to the Casino. Christian Constant the owner is a well-known French chef who at the age of 14 apprenticed at Restaurant Delmas in his hometown of Montauban in The Tarn et Garonne area of South West France. Over many years and a great career in some of Paris’s well-known kitchens including the Ledoyen Restaurant, The Ritz and finally as Executive Chef at The Hotel de Crillon, at the age of 45 he decided to realise his longtime dream of owning his own restaurant. So in 1997 he opened the luxury but informal brasserie Le Violon d’Ingres on rue Saint-Dominique in Paris. This restaurant today boasts a Michelin Star. He now has 3 restaurants on this street in Paris and the street is affectionately known by locals as Rue Constant! He also has Le Bibent in Toulouse. He owns three Les Cocottes, 2 in Paris, one up the Eiffel tower and this newest one here in the Haute Savoie.

The Cocotte - a cooking dish
The name Les Cocottes is derived from a cooking pot called a cocotte. This is French cooking pot which is normally round or oval and made from cast-iron or a heatproof ceramic. Le Creuset and Staub are well known makes of Cocottes and many of the dishes at Les Cocottes are served in Staub dishes which are made in France and known as ‘The Chefs Choice’

Menus and great choices!
Les Cocottes offer an A La Carte menu and a formule and menus with several choices. At lunchtimes Monday – Friday, the Menu du Jour is excellent value for a great lunch. *There is a choice of 2 courses for €18 and 3 courses for €24 and a choice of around 8 – 10 dishes for each course. In the evenings there are various menus offered at varying prices as well as the A La Carte menu.
This restaurant is in a good location just off the A40 autoroute at the Swiss border and open 7 days a week. So if you're heading for the French Alps, down to the south, or up to the North - this is a great place to stop for a good lunch with easy parking. There is a separate dining area that I have seen used for business lunches and parties. Les Cocottes does get busy especially on the terrace in summer, so it is advisable to book.

As I’m sure you know, ‘ma cocotte’ is also a pet name like ‘sweetie’. Have not tried the Constant restaurants, but that address in St. Julien is not far and looks well worth a visit!
Haha yes…my little cooking pot! comme ma petite chou! as endearing as my little cabbage!! This restaurant is worth a try and great to find somewhere open on a Sunday and Monday!
